In Hawaii, airplanes get a lot of wear + tear...
They take off very often + they land very often...because it is an island...Mostly take-offs + landings...
The salt + the water cause corrosion, you know, rust...
The heat of the many many take-offs + landings combined with the salt + the water make for airplanes that can fall apart faster than you can spell Hawaii...
If a manufacturer of an airplane recommends an upgrade to the airplane they sold to Hawaii, the person who bought the airplane has one year to make the upgrade...
One whole year...
This is pretty much standard in the world...
So, say, I make airplanes, + I think that your airplane needs a new rubber gasket, because I noticed your rubber gasket was a little worn out looking last time I flew Hawaii airlines or whatever- + I send you a letter saying you need this new better rubber gasket, well, you have one year to comply...a year...
So, this is why the helicopter off the coast of newfoundland crashed...
because why? because, they take off + land alot, because they are just going to an offshore drilling site + back, so it's a lot of short trips, mostly takeoffs + landings...Which are the most stressful part of flying for the airplane...
Combined with the salty Atlantic Ocean, rust + corrosion...
Combined with the fact that safety upgrades can wait a whole entire year to get done...
Windy Sea Cove is a painting by Sari Grove...in a private collection now...
p.s. tip: "Wipe a few drops of oil on bicycles and tools to prevent rusting" (from Public Storage Toronto FAQs...)
p.p.s. leave baking soda boxes around to absorb odours...(same source)
