Update to this post: I give up, my conclusions led me to cancel my internet only price because I realised, for the moment, that this paradigm was not widely accepted + I would just get a bunch of regular collectors asking for a discount...It is just too confusing still...So, I took all my internet only prices down + am back to just 6K for the painting + I'll leave it at that for now...June 13, 2010...

Fixed, hourly, contigent...

3 ways to set prices...

1)Fixed: Each 36 by 48 inch painting by Sari Grove sells for 6 thousand dollars Canadian currency.

2)Hourly: Each month that Sari Grove works on a painting will add a thousand dollars to the cost...A 36 by 48 inch oil on canvas painting takes approximately 6 months of work so the fee will be 6 times one thousand...

3)Contigent: If you sell a painting by Sari Grove on her behalf, in good faith, + have put in a valid amount of time + energy into the sale, as well as contributing a nice physical location + other niceties, then that painting will technically sell to you for 4 thousand dollars + you can mark it up to your client to 6 thousand dollars + pocket the extra 2 grand yourself as a one third commission on the total price...this is also similar to "on consignment"...

This means that the artist is getting 2 thousand dollars less on the sale of her painting...Why would she do this? Theoretically less work...You are paying someone else to do the selling part for you...How do you prevent collectors from just asking for the 4 thousand dollar price directly???

Well supposedly a gallery is supposed to sell for a long period of time, like the artist's life, they are supposed to sell more than one painting, you know, quantity, they are supposed to sell to nice people who pay promptly, to museums or fancy locations, do good press releases + shows for you, + usually they should buy some of your work directly or maybe give you a stipend...

Why if you are asking 6K would you let a collector buy the work for 4K? Um...because you can't get 6K? because you are a pushover? because a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? I'm not sure actually...

What is to stop the collector from asking you for the 4K price? If the gallery is handling the sale, that stops them. If you are handling the sale yourself, + paying a commission out to a physical location with a viewing room, then I guess you can cut them out of the deal if the physical location was not used...Only If you are controlling the deal + collecting the full monies...Or you can offer your physical location rental money for the space + give them no commission...

My viewing room, the one that I use to show works in person, is at a private mailbox joint nearby. Their viewing rooms can be rented for a thousand dollars a month...They have two...So, theoretically I could pay them upfront for a month of time, hang my 6K painting there for a month for a thousand dollars, + not give them a commission on the sale if sold, + pocket 5K...

What's the difference? I gave them a thou up front. I took a risk. If the painting does not sell in the month I am out one thou. But I got a show out of it...This is why some artists are taking a risk with their own money +renting space to show. But remember, if the painting doesn't sell, you are out the rent money...

Now, if the painting sells from the internet directly + I didn't need to meet you in the physical viewing room in person then it costs me less money. Less either a commission of ONE THIRD of the sale to the viewing room locale or less rent money that I paid upfront.

So, if I am NOT represented by a gallery, I can sell directly on the internet to a collector for one third less of the asking price...Or I can sell at full price with the use of a physical viewing room...

Like many manufacturers are realising, it is cheaper to sell directly on the internet. Conversely it is more expensive to sell from a physical location. So you need two prices, an internet only price + a bricks + mortar price...

This is a new paradigm. I reiterate, this is ONLY for NON- represented artists who are self-employed + calling their own shots. If you are with a real gallery then you cannot cut them out of sales...Also should not. The only thing you might be able to do with a real gallery is say this:" Let's offer two prices, an internet only price + a bricks + mortar price. I will give you a one third commission on either type of sale, promise." and do it.

<script type="text/javascript"></script> ze: large;"&gt;  + then you are still allowing your employee so to speak to get some money...So what do you get? Well, let's try it... Internet only price: 4K asking to collectors, your friend with the physical location gets a one third cut of that anyways- so that would be...hmmm. 4K divided by 3= about 1333 dollars...so you give that to the private mailbox guy with the viewing room anyway? Well, actually the private mailbox guy also handles your shipping so you could just give him that money for shipping + packing the painting...

What's your Take on internet only sales? Um, 1333 dollars X two (because artists get two thirds of any sale traditionally)...so, 2 X 1333= 2666 dollars Canadian currency...

So you are getting less money on an internet sale, but you are spending less too, + maybe you could give the private mailbox guy with the viewing room his cut in services rather than a straight cash fee. Now you have a good relationship with your shipper dude, + he will make deliveries for you too, which is handy...

Just trying to figure this out here out loud folks...feel free to approve in comments...
